Custom order : Oak and Walnut wishing well

We had a great learning experience building this Oak and Walnut exterior wishing well.

Initially, we planned the design using one of our applications "moblo". This gave the customer a visual representation of what the well would look like and allowed for adjustments for height or appearance.

The foundation of the well is built using 5 layers of oak jointed together with a walnut top strip. Our difficulty with this piece was replicating the exact same cut 20 times on each end of the wood. Some were out by a mm or 2mm which was remedied with a bit of light chisel work.

The bucket and spindle were held on with bearings to ensure longer lasting spindle. Where the wood is usually rested within a cylinder channel, this, if not tight, will result in a wobbling effect. And if too tight, wont allow for wood expansion and could cause the wood to split. By adding bearings, this allows free movement with very little woodmovement affecting the well.

The roof was made using solid american black walnut.

On completion, its clear to see that the visual representation does give a clear guide to how the product would look, but I think you'd agree that the final outcome with the oiled wood just gives it a much more refined look.

As always, if you have an idea, lets bring it to life.
